Building Blocks Committee

This Building Blocks Committee has oversight for all logistics and promotion of the Council’s signature half-day program designed to present information useful to those wanting to know more about planned giving. Target audiences include one-person not-for-profit development officers looking to add planned giving to their program, estate planning attorneys and CPAs who want to improve their knowledge of charitable giving vehicles, and community volunteers who want to better assist with their organization’s planned giving efforts. The speakers bring many years of planned giving experience to share in this program. Large general sessions coupled with smaller breakout sessions will allow attendees to track their own paths during the conference, ask direct questions of presenters, and develop relationships with other planned giving professionals and volunteers in this community and beyond.

 PLANNED GIVING IN A COMPREHENSIVE CAMPAIGN

 This highly interactive seminar will review how to successfully integrate and maximize planned gifts during a comprehensive fundraising campaign.  Specific techniques that will be explained include use of integrated major and planned gift identification, cultivation, recognition and solicitation including coordinated proposals. Strategies to establish campaign and planned gift goals, as well as how to count planned gifts, will be shared. Suggestions for involving the board of directors will be highlighted.

PPP Tracks: Charitable Estate Planning – Approaches to gifts integrating current or deferred components; Marketing – Tools/techniques for identifying donors and inspiring them to make charitable gifts; Management Best practices for running a gift program and communicating value to executive managers.

Phil Purcell currently serves as Vice President for Planned Giving and Endowment Stewardship at the Ball State University Foundation where he recently assisted with the successful completion of a $200 million campaign, of which $65 million in planned gifts was raised.

He teaches courses on Law and Philanthropy, Nonprofit Organization Law and Planned Giving as adjunct faculty for the Indiana University School of Law (Bloomington) and Indiana University School of Philanthropy (Indianapolis).

Phil serves as a member of the Tax Exempt Advisory Council for the Internal Revenue Service (Great Lakes states) and on the editorial advisory board of Planned Giving Today.  He has served on the board of directors for the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, Planned Giving Group of Indiana (past president) and Association of Fundraising Professionals – Indiana (past president).  He is an attorney and member of the American and Indiana State Bar Associations.

Phil received his B.A. degree from Wabash College (magna cum laude)and his J.D. and M.P.A. degrees (with honors) from Indiana University.
